Reading is important in all the students'  school subjects .

One way to improve reading skills is for the students to read daily.

Below are several suggestions to encourage reading.

Parents can conduct shared reading activities with their child(ren).  Alternate reading aloud with him or her, first you read then your child reads from the same book.  After the reading you can discuss the book, its characters, setting, events, etc.
Have them choose their own books.  Children will most likely want to continue reading books that interest them.
Use the library regularly.  Several books can be borrowed at a time which will make the trip worthwhile.  Libraries usually have a summer reading activity for children as well as age appropriate book lists.
Conduct a  book club.  Have your child and several friends read the same book and encourage them to discuss it.
Provide magazines written for children.  Highlights for children, Sports Illustrated for Kids, or National Geographic World provide interesting articles and photography as well as activities for children.
Current Events.  Older children can keep current with world events while maintaining reading skills and developing vocabulary by reading the newspaper and news magazines.
Environmental reading can be practiced on everyday trips to the grocery store, post office, etc., as children read road signs, store names, print on trucks, etc.
Most importantly - Enjoy Reading!
